Bye Bye WRINKLES!

At Advantage Therapy Solutions in Greenville, NC, we often talk about the health benefits of light therapy: expedited wound and injury healing, reduced inflammation, pain relief, increased energy, and metabolism boost. However, a growing body of research suggests that there are also cosmetic benefits! Let’s explore a few of the many studies about cosmetic benefits to light therapy:

Skin

In one double-blinded, placebo-controlled study, patients with facial wrinkles were treated with LED light therapy or a sham treatment, on the right half of their faces, twice a week for four weeks. Doctors then evaluated the skin and found statistically significant reduction in wrinkles and increase of skin elasticity. Biopsied skin showed increased collagen and elastin fibers (the building blocks of healthy skin).

In another study, patients received 9 LED light therapy treatments over 5 weeks. 12 weeks after treatment, doctors evaluated patients’ skin with a profilometer, a measuring instrument that quantifies roughness. Profilometer analysis showed there was a statistically significant improvement in wrinkles. Subjects also reported improvements in softness, smoothness, and firmness. Electron microscope analysis of biopsied skin found evidence of thicker collagen fibers.

Cellulite

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial, doctors used green LED light diodes on 34 women and a sham treatment on the other 34 women. 19 of the subjects (56%) in the LED light group achieved a decrease in one or more stages on the Nurnberger-Muller grading scale (a scale designed by doctors Nurnberger and Muller to quantify cellulite). Only three subjects in the sham treatment group saw any change. Women in the LED light group also saw statistically significant decreases in thigh circumference and mean baseline body weight, versus no change in the sham-treated groups.

The therapy works by increasing ATP production, reducing oxidative stress, and restoring cellular respiration in damaged cells, allowing them to repair and return to healthy function. It can be administered through whole-body treatments or handheld devices, and the recommended treatment protocol may vary based on the severity and history of the condition being treated.
